Ebook About Fake boyfriends for a week? Yes, please.Carter Olson never expected he’d get a chance to date his older brother’s best friend, Rip Taylor.Wished for it? Yes. Fantasized about it? Possibly too much. But ever thought it would actually happen? Not in a million years, since Rip is straight. But even if it’s just to try and win a gay game show, having Rip for a boyfriend—even a temporary/pretend one—is still the best thing to happen to Carter in... well, ever.Especially because Rip’s so good at it.Amazingly good, actually. So good that Carter starts to hope that maybe it won’t have to end once the show’s over…If there are two things Rip Taylor lives for, they’re having fun and being there for his friends, so a trip to Vegas to help surprise his best friend’s girlfriend with a big, flashy proposal sounds awesome. And even more fun? His bestie's plan to try and win some prize money for the wedding by signing the two of them up as contestants on the The Boyfriend Game. The game show is sponsored by the gay dating app bLoved, and Rip is all in. He may be straight, but he's never been narrow, and when circumstances (a.k.a. a best friend who can't hold his tequila) mean that little Carter Olson gets roped into being Rip's fake boyfriend instead, that’s almost better… because who wouldn’t be able to be a convincing boyfriend to Carter? After all, Carter’s hella sweet.Kind of adorable, actually. And really, really easy to get into character with…Winning The Boyfriend Game? Rip and Carter have it in the bag.The Boyfriend Game is a gay romance novel of approximately 75,000 words that contains some confusion about tops and bottoms, a straight guy who realizes he isn’t, an ice cube that melts much too fast, and the kind of luck that can only be found in Vegas. Every Stella Starling romance takes place in the same interconnected, contemporary world. The Boyfriend Game is a standalone book with cameos from other Stella Starling stories, a #boyfriendsbybLoved spinoff that takes place around the time of the epilogue from Ready For Love (Book One of the Semper Fi series).Book The Boyfriend Game (#BoyfriendsByBLoved) Review :
Cute read, mostly. I'm not a fan of public declarations of anything but I'm so used to it, I just cringe my way through. The mains were sweet together and I didn't mind how fast Rip figured out his place on the rainbow spectrum. It was nice to see a lack of angst about new attraction for a change. I also liked that the character didn't basically go "whelp, I guess I'm gay now" and completely ignore his history of enjoying sex with women. I REALLY liked that the author (briefly) addressed the issue of bi-erasure that is still prevalent in our society, even (and most disturbingly) in the rainbow community.HOWEVER I did NOT appreciate that the entire premise on the book rested on the gay character's own BROTHER having such a heaping dose of heterosexual entitlement that he felt it was OK to play dressup as a gay person for a week. It minimizes the very real consequences queer people endure when they come out to others and the fact that they're at risk of negative consequences every day for the whole of their lives. This straight guy was basically trying to scam a bunch of gay people out of money to pay for his wedding, while being totally assured he already landed the love of his life and that all of his friends and family would know he was actually straight and he would suffer no negative consequences whatsoever and just comfortably resume his normal life after this week of fun. Not only did his best friend immediately jump on board for a lark, his gay brother somehow didn't see anything wrong with this beyond how difficult and potentially embarrassing the lie would be. Even when the scam is eventually exposed in one of the most cringe-worthy moments of the book and the gay people in the audience call them out on their behavior, everything is somehow immediately forgiven??? because true love was found or something. And then the company pays for the straight couples wedding anyway. It was just mind blowingly insensitive to actual queer people while somehow also portraying crap that happens to us every day. "Lol I was gay for a week for money" is not a cute story. Be better allies. Another wonderful book by Stella Starling. Her characters are wonderful, and this book is no different.Carter is a sweetheart. He's still in school and he's working hard to get his degree and while he's always had a crush on his brother's best friend, Rip, he's never shown it. So when Rip and Cam come up with a plan to win a game show featuring gay couples, Carter thinks it's a horrible idea. Especially when they find Cam too sick to participate and Carter is roped in.Once Rip and Carter spend time together, the story is quick (lasting one week) and although they've known each other since kids, Rip is seeing Carter in a different way and realizing he might not be as straight as he believed. They both explore their feelings as the show throws them into situations where they are unable to hide their desire for the other. This is a wonderful story that made me laugh aloud. Rip is the sweetest man ever and you can see that he cares for Carter, even though he's not adept at explaining his feelings. The end is absolutely wonderful and the entire book had me smiling. I could not recommend The Boyfriend Game highly enough!
