Another solid entry in the Hexworld series, and another heart warming couple at its center. Jamie, a cop and witch who lost part of his left leg as one of Roosevelt's rough riders, is the last thing Nick, a warhorse familiar who is radical independent and anti-witch, wants in his life. But they're thrown together because familiars are being gruesomely slaughtered in Central Park. While there are just a few tropes in this book that aren't handled as well as in the previous books, where the author seems to take delight in misdirection and surprise plot twists, they don't detract from an overall satisfying story with some steamy scenes between the main characters - but also some chilling moments as they confront a serial killer. The couples that Jordan Hawk has given us in this series - Jamie and Nick, Mal and Owen, Cicero and Tom - are each wonderfully different, each having had to navigate personality clashes and external threats to find each other. But in each case the author has found ways to describe the mix of warmth, caring, passionate intensity, and desire that's unique to each couple and that makes me glad to have spent time with them. Hawk is exceptionally good at including the subtle gesture, the intimate touch, and the nonverbal communication that passes between the lovers in her books, gestures we can all relate to from our own lives. And want more..... Finally, these books have made me keenly interested in the setting - 1890's New York City. For instance, the author has done a great job with her villain, whose rampage in Central Park provides a fascinating glimpse of how much has changed and stayed the same there. I was annoyed by Nick's fixed intention to think the worst of all witches, and by Jamie's repeated insistence on what a good man his uncle really is (both of which lead to some poor decisions), but characters without any flaws or weaknesses are boring. Each in their own way is determined to do what's right.The way amputee Jamie is often frustrated to find himself treated is a curious mix of invalid who is rarely even allowed to make major choices for himself, and so-called war hero (though in his secret heart, the campaign felt more like a string of debacles). Nick's matter-of-factness, OTOH, was one of the first characteristics proving he was more than the *rear* part of a horse.I skipped Hexmaker because I haven't yet bought that volume (unlike Hexslayer, which had been waiting in my queue for a while), so I did give myself a few slightly-confusing spoiler bits, but not too bad. This plot is basically separate and enjoyable on its own, though the three previous pairs have a significant secondary presence (Rook is Nick's younger brother, for example, in a relationship strained by clashing views of the MWP and witch/familiar bonding).I don't want to discuss the killer-of-feral-familiars plot much. Some developments and connections you may see coming, but I'm pretty sure at least a few will surprise you. The climactic confrontation is quite dramatic. Crime scenes and such make use of a number of real locations, some still extant, mainly in Central Park.As for proofreading, I caught four or five minor typos including an I-should-be-me, a tense error (forbid s/b forbade), two transposed letters that got past SpellCheck (solider s/b soldier). and an unwanted apostrophe (one's s/b ones). Nothing to really take you out of the story.Right now I'm trying to decide whether I want to go on forward or fill in the gap first, but this certainly isn't my last of the series.
