Ebook About Cyra, a rare Omega phoenix shifter, has had a rough week, to say the least.First, two playboy Alphas, a hydra and a griffin, start showing up at the cafe she works at. Their teasing making her all hot and bothered, no matter how much she tries to ignore them. And then she accidentally accepts to play a princess at a spoiled shifter kid’s birthday party, where her crappy old car promptly breaks down. Luckily, or maybe she’s just cursed, a cerberus and a centaur Alpha are there to save the day and give her a ride home. For years, Cyra has managed to hide herself from other shifters, pretending she’s human. Because she doesn’t want her parents to marry her off to a rich asshole Alpha for money and status or to be kidnapped and bred like some other rare Omega shifters. She wants her freedom, to be able to make her own choices, and both of those things are taken away the moment she’s mated. Once she’s claimed by an Alpha, she’ll become that Alpha’s property, and she refuses to live like that. But now everything she’s worked so hard for is falling apart around her. Money is tight, and with her crappy car constantly needing repairs, she won’t be able to afford the medication she needs to stay hidden from shifters, especially with the mating season only weeks away.So she makes a reckless decision and takes the cerberus and the centaur up on their offer to be their date to the yearly Night Gala, an exclusive shifter event for bachelor Alphas, Betas and Omegas, though it’s not uncommon for humans to attend too, as ‘dates’ or serving staff. Their offer is too tempting, one night of boring chats while looking pretty, and all her money problems will be solved. That is, until the hydra and griffin Alphas also appear at the Night Gala and everything goes to hell…This is the first book in the Her Shifter Harem’s Babies series, a paranormal Omegaverse reverse harem #WhyChoose story. I, like a lot of readers, am new to Omegaverse type fiction. With my next to little knowledge of it, I decided to give this book an optimistic try. The summary seemed interesting enough to buy it and I did. Also I had noticed a lot of reviewers mentioning they got an ARC from Booksprout. Whether that convinced them to rate this novel higher I'm not sure, but I didn't get one so here's my review.*SPOILERS/ TRIGGER WARNING AHEAD*Let me name the positive points I had with this novel first. The one thing I enjoyed a lot was the character Max. I enjoyed that his character seemed very down to earth. His dialogue felt natural and the chapters that were written in his POV seemed to shine the best. Another enjoyable moment was the vulnerability behind most out of the 4 male characters. Max and Spencer having a talk over their sexualities while living as pressured Alphas felt really genuine and something you don't come across often. Now moving on to the negative points. Like I said before, I have very little knowledge of the terminology commonly used within this sub genre, but even if I did the lack of defining really irked me. I was hoping the author would provide me knowledge as to what makes a difference between Alphas,Betas, and Omegas, but I never got it. What separates a Beta from an Alpha? If Omegas are breeding machines, then why at all was an Omega as rare as Cyra allowed to live alone? How is interspecies breeding allowed? You could say it's up to my own interpretation or that I should know these things already, but I don't accept that when this is the 1st book. Why do we need labels for shifter parents? Omega mum? Alpha father? World building is pretty key here because I felt like I was missing a large chunk of context that just wasn't being given. Another thing being how contradictory our lead female protagonist is. Cyra is seen by the guys as fiery and independent. She sees herself as a girl who doesn't want an Alpha or anyone's help in finance. She comes off as a brat quite frankly with how often she fights the guys. Barely any polite dialogue with the men (because most of it she's showing disdain) and by the end she's admitting her romantic love for them? It's hard to suspend your disbelief when a guy's POV says 1 thing and her POVthe other.Speaking of the end of the novel, Cyra is raped. I have tried to go back and forth on this, but simply by her post coital reaction, she is. Her Omega 'heat' is the driving force for her finally giving in to her sexual urges, and the guys are also literally out of their rational minds to stop it from happening. There is next to no valid consent, because of Cyra being as contradictory as she is. And no proper wording really disputes that. The author also fails to write believable moments of intimacy. The writing around these bits are very juvenile and very awkward. I could write a longer paragraph on it, but I'll spare that.Overall this book needed more context, and more chapters to really let this story breathe well. Character relationships suffered the most. I had higher hopes for a novel that was rated this highly, but I feel deceived to be honest. This universe justifies rape, has an unforgiving male protagonist, and without proper context can be seen as pretty racist. My message to the author is that this novel has a lot of untapped potential if it's given more care and more time to explore its own universe. All great books come without a rush for a reason. So If you want a fun unbelievable romp about a girl being pined after 4 hot guys, go ahead and indulge. I'd been looking at this book for a while after putting on my list and finally decided to try it. The description kind of threw me off, but I ended up enjoying how all the characters met and the circumstances of story. I admire Cyra's determination to be independent, even if that means struggling. Some things are more important than money and living comfortably. I also enjoyed the guys fighting against their families to make their own choices. Not really a fan of throwing in the physical attraction between two of the guys at the same time they find out they have a true mate, but that's just my preference with RHs. As long as they keep it about Cyra I can deal with it. Overall a pretty good read.
